POWERHOUSE, in its 30-year existence has played well over 1000 shows in festivals, clubs, theatres, private functions and corporate events in places everywhere from the US midwest to across the pond in Portugal and the Azores Islands. The band, consisting of a full three-piece horn section, five-piece rhythm section and multi-lead vocalists, was originally formed to emulate the 60's soul/horn bands, revived again by the first Blues Brothers movie. As the band developed, it retained this early Motown/Soul/R&B ‘feel’ while adding newer mostly horn and vocal-dominant material to their show.

There are a lot of bands doing Chicago tribute shows now. But back in the early 90’s, when Powerhouse decided to put together their Chicago Transit tribute act, they were the first in the world to do so. The band’s five singers, all of lead quality, the three-piece horn section, and the intricate horn arrangements of the band’s trombonist, Dan Elliot, made this show a natural for the band – even getting credit from the band Chicago, themselves. Over the past twenty years, the band, based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada has performed their show at festivals, theatres, casinos and various other venues from as far east as the Gatineau Hills in Quebec to the USA Midwest – including Chicago, Illinois, itself. The band, with its multi-piece horn section, two keyboardists and multi-vocalists is able to cover all the Chicago material from the early horn- dominant classics like ‘Make Me Smile’, ’25 or 6 to 4’ and ‘Saturday in the Park’ to the later, softer, mostly keyboard-oriented ballads like ‘If You Leave Me Now’ and ‘Baby What a Big Surprise’. The band has been performing their tribute act every year since the mid 1990’s and continues to add material and new songs to their show, today.

Doug Varty wears many hats. A life-long Canadian musician, songwriter and recording artist, Doug has toured the world with his music since he first left home at age 17 to join a recording and touring band in Toronto. Over the last four decades, he’s opened for rock legends like Tina Turner, Rush, Bob Seger, Meatloaf, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Roy Orbison, just to name a few. “When my band and I used to play Rod Stewart covers in pubs, people would often ask me if I was lip syncing to a track because of the striking similarity between myself and Mr. Stewart’s voices.”, says Doug. “When I assured them that it was really me, they’d insist that me doing a Rod tribute show would be a big hit. Though a little reluctant at first to wear the wig and the shiny suits, I started out in the tribute biz about twenty years ago and quickly learned to embrace the opportunity to become someone else, just for a while.”
